WHITE PRIVILEGE

It seems that some people are offended by the idea that the color of your skin gives you privilege. I asked my dear friend, Deborah, How do we get white people to understand? She just smiled and said, “How do you tell a fish it’s wet? If that’s all you know. It’s really difficult.

The privilege we get from an accident of ancestry is obvious to me. My son and his friend plan to meet at a restaurant. Mike is seated immediately. His friend, who is not white had to wait at the door until Mike called to him. Shopping can be difficult if you were black, the chances are you would be followed, not asked to be helped, watched.

If you don’t think you are privileged answer one question. James Baldwin asked, “Would you rather be black in the United States?”
